Please try again later. Verified Purchase. This is a required book for the CS department at my school. I bought the book and saw the reviews and thought it was going to be horrible. It's not. I'm not a "math person" as they say, though I don't hate it and I don't think it's beyond me, or CS in general would be. I was an English major in my undergrad, and I say that to say this: this is a very concise and pithy intro to Discrete Math. You have to have remembered some algebra to follow along with the proofs, but it lays it all out wonderfully -- and step-by-step.
One negative reviewer said there is no order, and I don't understand that. Discrete math takes from several sub-disciplines within mathematics there was even debate years ago whether there should be discrete math courses, as Logic, Number Theory, etc are offered in math departments -- and at one time, any computer scientist was an engineer and further back something of an electrician ; if his pace isn't your style, you could get text books on the individual sub-disciplines. How much more logically could it be laid out? All in all, this is my first DM book, and I've purchased two others Essentials of DM and DM with Applications , so if I feel like it ISN'T as logically laid out as it could be, or anything else, I'll update my review. For now, it's a very good book which is teaching me a lot. In the end though, this is my review: if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. The paperback had some section numbering differences from the hardback, nothing you cant figure out, just be aware.
The content is Not sure that's the right word, but it definitely gets your brain working in ways you may not have used it before. That might be the point. Anyway, there were a lot of tough concepts that didn't have more than an example or two, could have used more to really grasp what was going on. Use online resources to supplement! YT has several great channels on the topics of discrete. I wouldn't have passed without them! Re-reading this, I'd say this review is more for the student going into a discrete class than the general book buyer. You can do it, it'll be hard; but if I can, you can. Good luck! I bought this a little into the school year so I already had a new copy of the book, which I returned when this arrived. It arrived earlier than the estimated date I originally received thankfully. But it was taped up with clear and black tape. The book wasn't falling apart but parts of it were hidden, at first I feared it was the wrong edition.
But that was not the issue, I'm not sure what the issue really is. When I lifted up some of the book it seems the book might be a donation, or meant to become a donation after use. And whoever originally sought to sell this donated book was trying to hide it. The book is exactly the same, content-wise, to that of my classmates. But I don't think I'm going to be able to sell it in person given the circumstances. The reason i say its an ok book and give it three starts is since it is only useful if you have some computer science background and know how to code a bit. I found that this book indeed had many algorithms that helped me in my other classes.
The reason its not so great its because the book did not show in some cases on how to solve the particular problem given. Quick View.
